Commercial Backflow Device Replacement for 78,000 SF Hotel

Commercial Plumbing Project Spotlight: Backflow Device Replacement at Homewood Suites in Nashua, NH

Commercial plumbing systems play a vital role in protecting public health and ensuring the safe operation of large buildings. At Denommee Plumbing, HVAC & Electric, we specialize in providing expert plumbing service for hotels, restaurants, healthcare facilities, retail properties, and more across Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. Recently, our team was called to perform a critical backflow prevention device replacement for the 78,000 sq. ft., 105-room Homewood Suites hotel in Nashua, NH.

This project demonstrates both the complexity of modern commercial plumbing systems and the unique value Denommee brings to facility managers and property owners.

What Is a Backflow Device and How Does It Work?

A backflow prevention device is a specialized plumbing component that keeps water flowing in one direction—into a building’s system—while preventing contaminated or used water from flowing backward into the clean municipal water supply.

Backflow can occur when changes in pressure cause water to reverse direction, potentially drawing contaminants (chemicals, cleaning agents, or wastewater) into potable lines. To prevent this, devices like double-check valve assemblies (DCVAs) or reduced pressure zone (RPZ) assemblies are installed.

How Backflow Preventers Work

  • Check Valves: Internal spring-loaded check valves close automatically if water starts flowing backward.

  • Relief Valves: In some devices, a relief valve discharges water if pressure builds, ensuring contaminants never reach the potable supply.

  • Isolation Valves: Installed with unions, these allow for testing, maintenance, and future replacement without cutting into the system.

In commercial facilities like hotels, multiple backflow devices are often required to protect domestic water, irrigation, fire suppression, and mechanical systems. Regular testing and replacement are crucial to ensure compliance with plumbing codes and health regulations.

Why Backflow Prevention Matters

Backflow preventers are essential safety devices designed to keep contaminants from entering a building’s potable water supply. In commercial facilities like hotels, where water usage is high and connections are complex, maintaining backflow devices isn’t optional—it’s required by code and critical to guest safety.

Without functioning backflow devices, hotels face:

  • Risk of water contamination

  • Failed health and safety inspections

  • Potential fines and liability

  • Guest service disruptions

Regular testing, maintenance, and timely replacement of these devices are key to preventing these issues.

Project Scope: Replacing Dual 2-Inch Backflow Devices

At the Homewood Suites, our commercial plumbing division was tasked with replacing two aging 2” backflow preventers and associated piping. The work required careful planning and execution to minimize downtime and restore water service quickly.

Detailed Scope of Work

  • Water Shutdown: Our team coordinated with hotel management to safely shut down domestic water service during the replacement.

  • Removal & Disposal: We removed and properly disposed of the existing dual 2” backflow devices and approximately 10 feet of corroded piping.

  • New Installation: We supplied and installed two new 2” Watts backflow preventers, each with independent isolation valves, bypass valves, and unions for simplified future maintenance and replacement.

  • System Upgrades: We added a new lead-free hose bib to allow controlled drainage for future piping work.

  • Extended Piping: Our plumbers installed and piped approximately 20 feet of new copper lines to tie back into the existing system.

  • System Restoration: Once installation was complete, we restored water to the building, tested all connections, and confirmed leak-free, proper operation.

This project required precision, teamwork, and careful adherence to plumbing code—all while working in a live hotel environment.

Behind the Scenes: Skilled Commercial Plumbing in Action

This project showcased our skilled plumbers at work:

  • Measuring and layout of the new backflow assembly before installation

  • Pipe cutting and brazing to achieve precise, leak-free joints

  • Final assembly of the dual Watts backflow preventers and valve connections

Our team’s in-house capabilities allow us to complete these projects efficiently, ensuring minimal disruption for hotel operations.
