The Installation Process: Step-by-Step

Here’s how a typical mini-split installation works and what homeowners can expect:


1. In-Home Consultation and System Design

Every home is different. We start with a no-cost in-home consultation to assess:

  • Room sizes and layouts

  • Insulation and window conditions

  • Desired zones and temperature control

  • Electrical panel capacity and access points

  • The best locations for indoor and outdoor units

Based on your needs and budget, we’ll recommend the right system size, configuration, and style.


2. Placement of the Outdoor Unit (Condenser)

The outdoor condenser unit is the heart of your ductless system. It’s connected to the indoor units via refrigerant lines, electrical wiring, and a condensate drain.

Outdoor unit considerations:

  • Typically placed on the side or rear of the home, on a concrete or wall-mounted pad

  • Requires a few feet of clearance for airflow and maintenance

  • Weather-protected and built to withstand New England seasons

  • Quiet operation—comparable to a low hum, even under load

For multi-zone systems, one outdoor unit can often support 2 to 8 indoor heads, reducing the need for multiple condensers.


3. Indoor Unit Options and Placement

Ductless systems offer flexibility in design with several types of indoor units, including:

4. Installing the Linesets and Wiring

The indoor and outdoor units are connected through refrigerant lines, drain tubing, and electrical wiring, collectively known as the lineset.

Lineset Installation Details:

  • Routed through walls, ceilings, or soffits as discreetly as possible

  • Typically enclosed in protective line hide covers, color-matched to your home

  • Professional-grade sealants ensure a weatherproof and energy-efficient connection

  • Electrical work is handled by our licensed electricians as part of the install

Condensate drains are also routed to a safe discharge location, such as a floor drain or outdoor drain point, to carry away moisture from the indoor units.


5. Startup, Testing, Commissioning and Clean-Up

Once everything is connected:

  • We pressurize and vacuum-test the system to ensure it's leak-free

  • Recharge with refrigerant (if needed) and power up

  • Test all modes—cooling, heating, fan-only

  • Confirm proper drain flow and electrical safety

  • Walk you through how to use the remote control or smart thermostat
